| The people who run the City of Daytona Beach, in the guise of trying to create a "family resort" image, spend thousands of taxpayer's dollars harassing legitimate tax paying businesses and apprehending and prosecuting people for things like the rather innocuous crimes of wearing thongs covering less than 33% of their butts or covering less than 25% or even, heaven forbid, flashing their breasts. Aside from the fact that their are no standards or legal definitions for these measurements and they would not stand up to a legal challenge (although the City Commissioners have continually shown a willingness to waste plenty of tax dollars pursuing unwinnable legal battles) these "crimes" are activities that are really just a matter of people enjoying themselves without hurting anyone or infringing on anyone else's ability to do the same. I suspect, like most crusading politicians, they are simply trying to distract attention from their own activities (such as giving tax breaks to large corporations to develop luxury properties that most families can't afford or pursuing their own real estate deals). Each time a new condo or timeshare resort goes up the cost of services for the city increases and these costs are passed on to the property owners. Then the city tries to blame it on special events. |
